Study Overview

You will participate in a 3-month trial for smoking cessation and will attend study visits once weekly for the first month, then every other week for the remaining 2 months. There are a total of 10 study visits, with the first 6 visits lasting 90 minutes each and the last 4 visits lasting 30 minutes each.

Visits can take place at any of our three locations:at our main offices at the University of Chicago Hospitals in Hyde Park, at the Respiratory Health Association in the West Loop, or at Howard Brown in Lakeview. Appointment times are available between Monday through Friday, 9 am to 8 pm, depending on availability and location. Parking or CTA reimbursements will be provided.

After completing your visits, you will also engage in follow-up interviews at 6 and 12 months after your smoking quit date. These interviews will be conducted in person or by telephone.

Locations

University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) - Hyde Park, 5 miles south of the Loop - #1 on map (see below)

The mission of the UCMC is to provide superior healthcare in a compassionate manner, ever mindful of each patient's dignity and individuality. This is the main flagship location for our study.

•  Schedule: Wed 9:30-7pm, Thurs 12:30-8pm, and Fri 10:30am-7pm

•  Public Transportation: El: Red and Green to Garfield (details can be provided by staff) Bus: 2 Hyde Park Express, 4 Cottage Grove , 6 Jeffrey Express (from the Loop to Hyde Park )

•  Driving: Dan Ryan Expressway or Lake Shore Drive . Secured covered parking garage located across the street (59 th and Maryland ) from the Medical Center entrance.

 

Respiratory Health Association (RHA) - West Loop - #2 on map (see below)

The mission of the Respiratory Health Association is to promote healthy lungs and fight lung disease through research, advocacy, and education. We have allocated but limited space within the RHA to conduct sessions, visits, and/or follow-ups, as needed. Study participants will be enrolled at this location regardless of their lung health status.

•  Schedule: Thurs, 12-8pm

•  Public Transportation: El: Blue or Green to Ashland Bus: 9 Ashland , 20 Madison , 127 Madison/Roosevelt Circulator

•  Driving: Eisenhower or Kennedy Expressways. Free parking lot located adjacent to the RHA building.    

 

Howard Brown Health Center (HBHC - Lakeview, 6 miles north of the Loop - #3 on map (see below)

Howard Brown is committed to promoting the well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons through the provision of health care and wellness programs, including clinical, educational, social service and research activities. We have allocated but limited space within the HBHC to conduct sessions, visits, and/or follow-ups, as needed . Study participants will be enrolled at this location regardless of sexual orientation (i.e., straight or gay).

•  Public Transportation: El: Red to Sheridan Bus: 36 Broadway, 80 Irving Park, 151 Sheridan

•  Driving: Kennedy Expressway or Lake Shore Drive. Metered street parking available.
