What is Courage To Quit® ?                                                                     

Courage to Quit® is a stop smoking program sponsored by the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago (RHAMC). The program was developed by Dr. Andrea King, Professor at the University of Chicago , and associates at the RHAMC. Dr. King is a licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience in the treatment of tobacco and other addictions. The program is consistent with evidence-based smoking cessation methods as outlined in the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence (Fiore et al., 2008).

What is the treatment?

The Courage to Quit ® program includes an orientation meeting and six behavioral counseling sessions delivered in an individual, couples or group format. The quit date is usually the third session in the program. Each session includes information, practice skills, and support to help you reach your smoke-free goal. The program is flexible, with content that can be customized to many different participants.

Currently, individual sessions of Courage To Quit ® are being held at the University of Chicago , Department of Psychiatry, 5841 S. Maryland Ave. Chicago , IL .

What is the cost?

This program is currently paid for by insurance only. Most PPO Insurance plans, Medicare, and Medicaid are accepted (no HMO). This covers payment for 6-7 sessions and program materials.

Who is eligible?

Adults 18 years of age or older, who want to quit smoking, and are willing to attend 6-7 sessions are eligible. Those with significant untreated psychiatric or emotional disorders may be referred for medication management or psychotherapy prior to enrolling in smoking cessation.
